EXHAUST SYSTEM

The exhaust system is responsible for quieting the engine and moving harmful gasses away from the passenger compartment of the vehicle. Certain parts of the exhaust are also responsible for lowering emissions and can turn on a check engine light. Proper exhaust maintenance generally involves periodic inspection for leaks, rusted or broken parts, and parts that may be damaged due to impact with objects in the road or off road. We are fully equipped to perform most exhaust repairs in shop. We also install high performance mufflers and direct fit cat-back systems.
COMPONENTS
Most common exhaust systems are made up of an exhaust manifold that attaches to the engine, a catalytic converter that lowers emmissions, a muffler, that quiets the exhaust, and pipe that connects all the components and carries the exhaust gas to the rear of the vehicle away from the passenger compartment.
Probably the most important component of the system is the catalytic converter. If it fails, the computer knows using an oxygen sensor in the exhaust pipe behind the converter. When the converter looses it's ability to convert the harmful gasses, it also looses it's ability to store oxygen. The oxygen sensor after the converter senses the excessive oxygen passing the converter and sends that signal to the vehicles computer and the check engine light is illuminated. The converter can also easily become plugged with carbon therefore not allowing the exhaust through causing the engine to run terribly low on power. This is usually caused by an engine misfire that has gone unrepaired for some time. An original equipment converter by law is warrantied by the dealer for 8 years or 80,000 miles. All vehicles under missouri law 1980 model year and newer must have a catalytic converter installed and will not pass state safety inspection with out one. If dual exhaust is present, a converter must be installed on both sides.
The other components, manifold, pipe, muffler and hangers do not need any special attention unless rusted excessively or damaged as a result of impact or other means.
